Being stuck in a Reading Slump

Reading slumps suck. They suck hard.
For those of you, that do not know what a reading slump  is here is the Urban Dictionary definition, which is very accurate in my opinion:

Now that we have established what a reading slump is, I am going to go a bit into depth on this topic.
The reading slump can occur at any given moment. Sometimes it just hits you in the face, other times it approaches slowly and silent only to attack you way harder than necessary. The following are a few kinds of reading slumps that I have fallen into:

  1. There is the reading slump that comes when you finish a very good book. The book was so good, that it made you say: "I will never ever read a book that good again". And you wont. Not because there are no good books available to you, but because you wont touch a book for the next three month. Just because you are afraid of it being disappointing.
  2. Then there is the reading slump that comes because you have finished reading a book and forgot to start a new one. Suddenly you just forgot that reading exists and do anything in the world besides reading. There might be a small voice in the back of your head that reminds you of all the books on your TBR (to be read list), but you kind of choose to ignore it. This slump will last until one very boring Sunday, where you should tidy and clean but the moment you want to dust of your bookshelf there is this one book calling out to you. So you pick it up and fall in love with reading again.
  3. Third is the kind of reading slump that strikes you while reading a book. There are two types of this reading slump:
    • First, the one that strikes you while you are reading a book that you don't really enjoy. The book is not bad enough to stop reading it completely but it also isn't good enough to look forward to. To avoid that dilemma, you just don't read. But every night before you go to bed you catch a glimpse of the book and guilt starts to set in.
    • The second kind is the worst. Lets set the scene. You are reading a fantastic book. You love the characters, the plot is gripping but then... You just don't want to read it anymore. Suddenly, the thought of sitting in a comfy chair, with a nice tee while reading seems so boring to you. All the stories you could read seem so bad. If thats you, I am really sorry. You have been struck by the worts kind of reading slump. There seems to be just no solution. If you continue reading, you know that you wont enjoy the story as much as you could. But if you stop the reading slump wins.
Now that we have meet some of the many forms the reading slump takes, its time to tackle the most important question: HOW DO I GET OUT OF THIS HELL???????!??
There are good and bad news.
Bad news fist? Ok: There is no guaranteed way out of it.
The good news: There are some strategies that might help you.

Fist and foremost, try to relax. Reading can be a fun hobby, but if you are to stressed about it, the fun gets lost. In the end it does not matter if you have not read a single book this month.
Here are my tipps on how to get out of a reading slump.
  1. Go to your favorite book store. Being surrounded by books is a good way to get inspired to read again. Take your time, read the blurbs maybe even read a chapter if you find a book that you like. Take pictures of the books you like to buy them later. Just take in all of the good vibes.
  2. Buy a book at said book store. Sometimes a new book can solve a lot of problems. In this case it might get you to read again. Choose a book that really sparks you interest.
  3. Wait. Just wait until you want to read again. This could take some time, but is also a great opportunity to start a new hobby. Writing for example.
  4. Re-Read some of your favorites. You already know what to expect. You already know that you will love them. Also it is quite fun to revisit some old memories.
  5. Just read. In the end this one might be the most effective. Even if you don't really want to. Just so it. Once you will get a few chapters in, the reading slump will probably vanish.
If you could not tell my now. I am currently stuck in a reading slump. I have read a few books this month but reading them was more of a fight rather then enjoyment. It seems like my complete TBR is shit. All the books on my shelf are boring and none of them really call out to me.
Because of that I have decided to do a Re-Read month. As soon as I have finished the book I am currently struggling with, I will re-read my favorite series. Usually that gets me pumped again.

What are your tips and tricks to get out of a reading slump? Are you in one right now?
Thanks for reading and good luck fighting that reading slump.
